I first became acquainted with Pacific Garden Mission through my father, Dr. William McCarrell. He loved the Old Lighthouse and for over 50 years of his life ministered here preaching, teaching and serving on the Board of Trustees. I also recall the thrill it was for me to experience the mission first-hand as a youngster ministering here once a month with my youth group at Cicero Bible Church. Little did I realize that some 50 years later I would be serving as President, overseeing the various ministries of the Mission.
I have also been blessed with the privilege of having served some 15 years on the Board of Trustees, nine as Chairman.
We trust our web site encourages you as you glance not only at our rich history, but also at the tremendous things that God is doing in the lives of needy men, women and children today. Current ministries of the Mission include our Homeless Outreach to transient men, our Women and Children ministry; our Bible Academy program for resident men and women; and the Career Development program for both men and women which includes practical work experience, computer training, and GED classes in English and Math. Since that program started we have placed every graduate in a full time job. We also reach out beyond the walls of the mission to Chicago's large Polish community, to those living in Chicago's housing projects, to those languishing in jail cells and, of course, to millions around the world who listen to our "UNSHACKLED!" radio broadcasts.
More than anything, we want this web site to be a valuable, spiritual resource for you and your loved ones. It is our utmost desire to extend the ministry of Pacific Garden Mission to our friends online through a site that honors the Lord and directs everyone to Him. One of my favorite Scripture passages is Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
